The Material & Craft Story

Sabai is a hardy natural grass found across parts of India, valued for its long, strong fibres and traditionally used for rope, basketry and woven household goods. After harvesting, the grass is cleaned, softened and sun-dried before being twisted into sturdy cords. Artisans in Assam then weave the fibres by hand, creating the distinctive texture and natural variations that make each piece unique.

Hanwoven Sabai grass | Artisan-made in Assam, India

Handwoven from Sabai grass by artisans in Assam, the Amara Tote pairs a structured open weave with long shoulder straps and a hand-formed closure. Naturally lightweight yet remarkably strong, its richly varied fibres make every piece subtly one of a kind.

Due to the natural fibre and handmade construction, variations in tone, weave and form are part of the character of each piece.
